COVID-19 Preys on Those with Vitamin D Deficiency” say well over 100 international experts in an open letter. “The data strongly suggests that vitamin D is the safest, easiest, and most important anti-pandemic measure the world is failing to prioritise,”

Covid-19, it appears, has now become much more infectious! It’s still the case, however, that some people remain asymptomatic – while others develop serious complications.

The difference is not the virus – even the new variant – but the individual person’s level of immunity. By and large we have undervalued the simple things – like vitamin D – that nature has provided for the health of our immune systems.

And we have underestimated the damage done to our immunity by neglecting these simple things.

This year the importance of sunshine to our immunity has come into sharp focus! Sunshine triggers vitamin D production in the skin – and the vitamin both enables the immune system to do it’s job – and also prevents it from overreacting and producing dangerous levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Recent research even suggests that full-spectrum light on the skin, activates and mobilises T-cells – those crucial immune cells which kill off virally-infected cells in our bodies and modulate the immune response to viruses, preventing damaging overreaction.

We have underestimated the damage done to our immunity by neglecting these simple things.

Perhaps most under-appreciated has been the body’s microbiome. This plays a fundamental role on the induction, training and function of the immune system.

However, the overuse of antibiotics and an unhealthy diet can result in a microbiome that lacks the resilience and diversity required to establish balanced immune responses.

This accounts for some of the dramatic rise in autoimmune and inflammatory disorders where our symbiotic relationship with the microbiome has been the most affected. Poor gut health means impaired immunity.

We have underestimated the damage done to our immunity by neglecting these simple things.

Nutritional minerals

Then there are simple minerals and trace elements such as zinc and magnesium. Like vitamin D, zinc is critical for the mounting of an immune response – and also helps  prevent out-of-control inflammation – or cytokine storm – that can be damaging and even deadly.

Magnesium has a strong relation with the immune system, in both innate and acquired immune response. The deficiency, like vitamin D and zinc deficiencies, can result in increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines – or cytokine storm. In other words these two minerals are critical for the correct functioning of the immune system.

Dust of the earth

Zinc and magnesium are just two minerals – there are many more – all critical to health. It’s interesting to note that the Bible says “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the earth.” Minerals are simply the “dust of the earth“.  Yet the study of their critical role in every bodily function is astounding!

In their original, natural state fruits and vegetables provide these minerals and much more – when they are grown on mineral-rich soil. The microbiome of the soil enables the roots of plants to take up these minerals so long as the soil is healthy, living soil.

However, most of our soil is no longer healthy – nor does it contain a wide diversity of minerals and trace elements. Chemical fertilisation and weed-killers have seen to that. So fruits and vegetables grown on these impoverished soils do not contain enough of the nutrients needed by our immune systems.

We have underestimated the damage done to our immunity by neglecting these simple things.

Natural antivirals

Garlic, clove, echinacea, neem, ginseng, eucalyptus, oregano, dandelion and many, many other plants and herbs have anti-viral properties. However, selling these simple plants will not make anyone a fortune.  So no one is likely to fund the double-blind, randomised studies necessary to provide the kind of evidence that is insisted upon these days.

Neem leaves

Nature has provided these often undervalued herbs for our health and well-being.

We have underestimated the damage done to our immunity by neglecting these simple things.

Educated into imbecility

So the final conclusion would surely be that whereas other civilisations have been brought down by attacks of barbarians from without, ours had the unique distinction of training its own destroyers at its own educational institutions, and then providing them with facilities for propagating their destructive ideology far and wide, all at the public expense . . . Until at last, having educated himself into imbecility, and polluted and drugged himself into stupefaction, he keeled over – a weary, battered old brontosaurus – and became extinct.”

Malcolm Muggeridge 1903 – 1990

Those words were written by Malcolm Muggeridge, an English journalist, author and media personality. During World War II, he was a soldier and a spy. In the aftermath of World War 2, as a hugely influential London journalist, he converted to Christianity and advocated the teaching of Christ as the key to recovering moral stability in the nation.

The Bible says: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.” (1 Cor 1:19)

A prayer

Dear God – Creator of Heaven and Earth – we have underestimated your wisdom – and our need of receiving that wisdom from you.

We have put our trust in science instead of putting our trust in you. We have relied upon human resources instead of your resources.

And now Covid-19 is preying upon immune systems weakened by the neglect of your wise provision for us; “the safest, easiest, and most important anti-pandemic measures the world is failing to prioritise,”

Forgive us, we pray, and open the eyes of the powerful to these simple things. Overrule motives of profit and prestige. Bring about a paradigm shift in thinking in those who govern – and in those who advise the Government.

We ask all this in the name of Jesus – and for the glory of God   Amen
